I'll admit...we had a few minor things working against us for this shoot. First, we had to pick a day where all members of this extended family were available and in the same city...not too difficult actually. We may have had a shy child...but really...not a major issue. But then...about 10 minutes into the shoot, it poured rain, and with this many people involved, some from out of town...well we just had to keep going. Thankfully we found some shelter (and when I say we, i don't really mean me). All in all...we still managed to get the job done....and even had some fun doing it:)

Early December I travelled to the far off town of Ajax, Ontario to meet with this fabulous family. We had to squeeze our appointment in between dance classes and hockey, as this is one busy family...much like my own.

We strategically started with their son so him and dad could get to hockey....

Then, once both girls were back from dance, we got some family shots in:)

Then...along came the adorable little cousins who live down the road.

One for the grandparents...who also live on the street.

What an amazingly beautiful family! Can't wait to meet you again!

I've actually known this mom below for several years...which is why I can't quite find the words to describe the emotions I have felt over the years for this family. What I can describe though, is that this mom and son are loaded with spirit and a hilarious sense of humor regardless of the many challenges they have faced:)

Here's their story as told by mom...

Kyle isa 16 year old young man who loves sports, any sport. He watches,plays and probably dreams sports. Kyle enjoys school and his friendsand has an active social life. Kyle has been through more than most16 year olds should have to go through and I believe everything hehas gone through has made him a better, stronger person.

WhenKyle was born he was diagnosed with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus.Kyle was almost 5 hours old when he was sent to McMaster Hospital forsurgery to close his back. When he was 10 days old he had anothersurgery to insert his shunt to control the fluid in his brain. Kylewas an amazing baby, always happy and always laughing. He was two anda half when he received his first wheelchair and 6 months later hemet his baby sister. When he was 8 years old Kyle had to have surgeryon his kidneys and was also diagnosed with Scoliosis. Kyle didn’tlet his disability stop him; he played sledge hockey, baseball andbasketball and loved every minute of it. He was unstoppable!!!!

WhenKyle was 10, his sister was killed in a car accident at the age of 7,that day he didn’t only lose his sister he lost his best friend.Kyle and Emily were inseparable, always playing together and barelyever fighting. She was his biggest fan and was always there tosupport him with whatever he set his mind to. At the time of theaccident, we were both suffering from the loss but he was so muchstronger than me. Kyle was hurting but he was more worried about methen himself. He put his own feelings aside to help me deal with theloss of my daughter. There have been many moments in Kyle’s lifethat have made me proud but that is the proudest I have ever been ofhim. He showed great maturity and strength for a 10 year old. Kylewas my rock, always making sure I was ok and always the one holdingmy hand. Together we got through it and it only made us closer thenwe already were.

WhenKyle was 15 we went to Shriner’s Hospital in Philadelphia so hecould have his scoliosis repaired through various surgeries. Our 2month stay turned into almost 4 as there were complications duringsome of the surgeries. Kyle remained his happy self regardless of thepain and stress he was feeling during this stay. The surgery was asuccess and by time we left he was 6 inches taller and recognizablystraighter then he was when we arrived.

Kyleand I have grown up together, having him when I was 18 made me growup quicker than I am sure I wanted to or was prepared to but we havedone it together. We have conquered the hard times, we have enjoyedthe memorable times and we have survived the heartbreaking times andwe did it together. My son has continued to amaze me over the 16years he has been in my life and I am looking forward to what liesahead for him and for us as a family. I know that I am not the onlyone that is proud of him; he is the lucky one that has an angelwatching over him who is just as proud if not prouder of him.

Yup...that's right...TRIPLETS:) I'm just thankful that these lovely little ladies are 9 and not 2.

This family was so fun and easy to work with. The girls were so great....braving the spidery weeds to get the shot;) And their big sister...just gorgeous inside and out! After I met with them I had the opportunity to work with mom's sister and her family (i'll introduce you to them tomorrow).

It was definitely way too hard to pick favorites from this session...so here's a long post for you!

Helping Hearts - Audrey {Niagara Family Photographer}

Meet little Audrey with her super cool parents and super-duper cute doggy:) Audrey is the sweetest little girl who LOVES the fresh air and has the BEST little baby sounds ever.

This was one of the most laid back shoots i've had in a while. We spent the evening just walking around, finding some really interesting spots and just chatting about everything.

Here's Audreys story as told by her mom...

"Our daughter Audrey was a perfect little baby born right on the due date at home with no problems. When she went for her infant hearing tests, she failed 2 and the we were sent to Chedoke Hospital in Hamilton where she was diagnosed with Auditory Neuropathy Spectrum Disorder. We are never positive of what Audrey can or cannot hear. When Audrey was 11 months old we discovered that she was having seizures. After a lot of tests, an EEG, a MRI and a trip to McMaster University Hospital, we found out Audrey had Infantile Spasms (a rare form of epilepsy) as well as a hearing disorder. Her seizures, although they are controlled now, have caused her to be developmentally delayed and the medication she takes to control them can cause a loss of peripheral vision. We make a trip to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto every few months to monitor her vision. She has some of the skills a baby half her age has. On top of all this, her eyesight is now in question. She attends regular physio and speech therapy sessions. Despite everything that is going on with her, Audrey is a very happy and content baby."

My Happy Family:) {Niagara Family Photographer}

Last night I braved the daunting task of photographing my own family. It was painful! Seriously...somewhere in the midst of doing some pictures on an old log we disturbed a bee's nest hiding inside. And guess who got stung right on the butt...yup..that would be me:( Simon took one to the wrist and the kids ran out of there so fast they were spared. Glad I tested that area before bringing clients, lol.

I had two assistants, Simon and Liam..both promising up and comers in the photography industry. Liam even insisted a photo credit be displayed on his work.

It was an absolutely incredible experience. I didn't quite realize going in what a close role and relationship a photographer has with the bride, groom, wedding party and even guests. It was truly heart warming to be able to participate in such a beautiful and meaningful day in such a personal way.

Meet Isaac & his family. This was a particularly special shoot as it was a session for the Helping Hearts..which is a Canadian based organization that provides free photography for families with sick children.

5 year old Isaac was first diagnosied with cancer in September 2009. He had undergone 11 mths of chemo 2 mths of radiation and 7 surguries. Introducing, the much anticipated...Verna & family. Verna was the winner of the recent "Inspire me Mom" giveaway.

Let me share with you once again, her nomination letter that I received from the eldest of her grandchildren, Julie.

I would love to nominate my grandmother, Verna Collini, as mother of the year. My grandmother is mother to seven children ranging from ages 36 to 56 and she is grandmother to thirteen children age 32 and under with one more due next month and she is great grandmother to three babies under the age one. My grandmother spent her life raising children and grandchildren - that has been her career. She spent her life teaching, cooking, cleaning, sewing, reading, singing, dancing. In addition she was a dedicated wife to Tony Collini who suddenly left our extended family this past January. While my aunt, uncles and cousins cried our hearts out and sobbed all over each other during the emotional funeral services my grandmother was a pillar of strength - we attribute that to her strong sense of faith as she is an active member of St. Alfreds Parish, the Catholic Women's league and the Right to Life Association. I am thirty and the eldest granddaughter; my mother is the eldest child to Verna Collini. Since my mother married in 1975 she has started the tradition of joining her family for Sunday dinners, a tradition that continued as each child grew up, moved out and had children. Our family is now well known as the family that still eats a meal around a big table as all 30 members of this family join together to eat Sunday dinner. My grandmother prepares either all meals or at least a major dish and has generally hosted in her basement. Her famous dish is her spaghetti and meatballs made from scratch and enjoyed by everyone more than any other food in the world! I would love to have a random spaghetti dinner portrait session done to capture a magical family sunday dinner that is a part of our world thanks to grandma."

The truth about Lilli {Niagara Child Photographer}

I started to think of this post a few weeks back, when waiting around in the arena for my oldest son (for the bazillionth time in my life). Lilli was running around like a total maniac, rolling around on the filthy floors, hair everywhere..and basically..a total mess:) Otherwise known as..a normal kid. One of the "hockey dads" there (it was you Chase if you're reading this), teasingly said to me something along the lines of this "man..she sure looks so perfect in all those pictures you take but when you see her in person, lol). It was pretty funny. And sooo true!

So...I think i've mislead you for far too long now so here's the truth...my daughter actually is NOT a perfect little angel-child with that perfectly pouting look, frolicking happily through sun-filled fields of wildflowers.

Yes...I try to make it appear that way..because let's face it...it sure makes a cute picture:)

But the reality is..she's messy haired, ketchup-faced, sometimes hyperactive and bizarre! But still absolutely perfect despite it all. So..why not capture that too. The truth. Because in all reality, that's probably how I will want to remember her when she's all grown up, when she would never be caught dead with ketchup on her face:)

Let's Learn Hockey {St. Catharines Photographer}

This morning I had the pleasure of attending one extraordinary event at Ridley Arena called "Let's Learn Hockey". I was asked by "Chase" Director of Community Relations for KidzCanHelp.ca , an organization founded by kids that collects new and gently used hockey equipment for kids in need. As many of you know..i'm a hockey mom...and I strongly believe that organized sports can be such a beneficial experience for children...and that all children should be given the experience should they wish, regardless of their circumstances. The Let’s Learn Hockey Program provides children who are currently experiencing difficulty raising enough funds, to participate in the game of ice hockey.

All images taken this morning were done so in a manner to protect the identity of the participants..but here's a little glimpse of how it went down.

Maybe she has her family volunteering at a local charity, maybe she's committed to ensuring the health of herself and her children, maybe she does it all on her own, maybe she's highly involved in her community to ensure that only the best programs are available to her's and other children...oh there's so many different things it could be! And I want to hear all about it. And mostly, I want to hear about someone who can inspire me as a mom and all the other moms and parents out there.

Some highlights from our family trip last week to Arizona...by far one of the most beautiful places i've ever seen. Our week was a busy one...hiking in the mountains, horseback riding, a jeep tour in the red rocks of Sedona, and of course, plenty of shopping.

I'm refreshed! Recharged! And ready for spring!!!!

One of the things I love most about my job is when I get to see the process of a growing family...from getting to know the nervous young couple at the maternity shoot, then meeting them as first time parents who are so in love with their new bundle of love..and now, as with this now experienced family..seeing how these little tiny people have grown. Most of all..I love seeing and capturing those raw emotions that just beam from new parents!!!

A morning spent with some fabulous little ladies at NeVaeh Day Spa, enjoying all of the indulgences included with the spa's new...Children's party! And let me tell you...when I say kids spa party I do not mean the bubble gum, cheesy version of a "kids spa party"...no my friends...this..is..the..real deal! The girls were pampered with manicures, pedicures, facials, and of course...many yummy treats!!!!

Let me just start out by saying this...taking your own portrait is HARD! Very, very hard. And not just because you feel like a total loser doing it:), but difficult on many technical levels.

Whew!

It started about a month or so ago, in an online forum I am involved in, with many totally fabulous Canadian female photographers. Someone started a self portrait challenge and I was very hesitant to participate..but it does help a photographer to see things a bit differently when on the other side of the lens, so in the spirit of self development...here I went!

Introducing....me. Sarah Hancox.

Went back to the gym this morning..in line with my many many new years resolutions. Wasn't quite brave enough yet to actually look at the camera:)

and here I am in my backyard...it's small, but my only rear neighbors are a pack of coyotes so I can't really complain...but they do get a little loud sometimes. I am also sporting my sweet Ray-Bans my husband gave to me for my birthday last year..I love how they reveal what a total mess my yard is, lol.

and it's just not a complete post without my little afternoon buddy Lilli...you can regularly find us here in the afternoon before the boys get home, having our daily cuddle time. xo

The weather couldn't have been nicer this morning...a beautiful, crisp fall morning!

Here's a look into my morning with little Liam and family. I just LOVE when clients decide to have their family photography session at home..it just gives the whole thing much more of a personal feel. And this family lives on the perfect street for it with great mature trees lining the road...almost creating an umbrella over the whole street.

Do you ever meet certain people in life who just make you really feel something...some type of aura or energy??? Well in meeting this family, just being around them, you can really sense such a strong and powerful sense of true love and strength...I hope it shows through in their images below.

This family was my very first session as a part of "the littlest heroes project", now called "Inspiration through Art". Baby Elise suffers from a severe heart condition which has caused her to undergo not one, but two open heart surgeries...the first being in her first few weeks of life. But you would never know by looking at her, or being around her family. Elise is one tough cookie who is full of sunshine, life and laughter...and many funny faces too!

The one thing that has really stuck in my head that her mom told me during our shoot was

" we will not let this define who she is".
